These Spider Donuts are the perfect Halloween treat. Fresh baked chocolatey donuts dipped in a shiny chocolate ganache and decorated to look like cute spiders!
With Halloween just around the corner I know that I want to make Halloween special for my kids or maybe you’re looking to find something to bring for a Halloween party. Spider Donuts are easy, and your kids can help too!
Growing up we didn’t have fancy Halloween costumes; it was all DIY. My favorite memory of Halloween is trick or treating. I have five sisters; can you imagine the stash of candy we had after trick or treating. It felt like you could swim in the candy!
Halloween is a great holiday to dress up, eat tons of sweets, and just really have fun!
When I think of Halloween, I think of Chocolate Everything! And these easy spider donuts are everything Chocolate!
Why you will love these Spider Donuts:
- Quick and Easy!
- No frying required!
- Kid friendly! Let your little ones get creative!
- The Donuts are so good and taste better the next day! Perfect for planning ahead!
Ingredients/Tools for Spider Donuts:
- All Purpose Flour
- Cocoa: I experimented and used a natural Cocoa powder like Hershey’s, but the flavor was lacking. I would definitely do a Dutch Cocoa powder. Here is one of my favorites: Cacao Barry
- Sugar
- Oil: Any oil is fine, no butter or coconut oil substitutes
- Sour Cream: Can be substituted with Greek Yogurt
- Milk
- Cornstarch: Creates a soft texture
- Egg + Egg Yolk: The extra egg yolk adds richness, fat and tenderness to the donut
- Ferrer Rocher
- Candy Eyeballs
- Pocky Sticks
- Corn Syrup: Needed for a beautiful glaze!
- Donut Pan
How to make Spider Donuts:
In a large bowl, combine the eggs, sugar, oil, sour cream, vanilla and mix thoroughly.
Sift all the dry ingredients into a medium sized bowl.
Alternate by adding in the dry and the milk in thirds until mixed starting with dry first.
Grease a donut pan and fill the mold 2/3 full of the donut batter.
Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 5-7 minutes.
Once done allow them to full cool on a cooling rack.
To make the glaze:
Add the chocolate chips into a medium sized bowl and set aside.
Heat the heavy cream, butter and corn syrup in a small saucepan until hot, not boiling.
Once the mixture is hot pour over the chocolate and mix until the mixture is smooth. Allow it set and cool down for 10 minutes.
Decorate the spider donuts:
Dip the tops of the donuts into the glaze and then let them sit on the cooling rack to allow access to drip below.
Place the Ferrer Rocher in the donut hole and then cut the pocky sticks into 1.5 inches and place them on the sides of the spider to represent the legs. I choose to do 6 legs instead of 8 just because I thought they looked cuter with 6. Place the candy eyes on the Ferrer Rocher but making them lean on the glaze to allow them to stick and not move.
Spider Donut Making Tips:
Do not Overmix and Overbake
Once the Donuts have fully baked and have cooled for at least 10 minutes take them out of the pan.
Use Good Quality Cocoa Powder
Chocolate Donut Variations:
Glaze: As much as I love the chocolate glaze I also really enjoyed a regular glaze made with just powdered sugar and milk.
Ferrer Rocher: Another substitute would be Lindt Chocolate balls.
Pocky Sticks: You can substitute with Licorice, or pretzels.
Mini Donut Pan: Definitely can be made this way! Just bake them a little less.
Donut Storage:
The Donuts are best consumed the first and second day made. Anything beyond that the donuts get dry. They can be frozen up to up to 1 month.
